The Collegium system refers to the process of appointment and transfer of judges in the Supreme Court of India and the High Courts of India. It consists of the Chief Justice of India and a select group of senior judges who are responsible for recommending judges for appointment to the higher judiciary. The system was established by the Supreme Court in the 1993 judgment in the case of Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association v. Union of India.
